Apple TV, take two
| Source: PaidContent.org -- Jan. 15, 2008: "Steve Jobs used Macworld to unveil a new iTunes Movie Rentals addition to iTunes Store and an update to Apple TV that will let customers rent the movies and more directly on the box without needing a computer. " "...the potential game changer here is the Apple TV update - a complete interface overhaul that puts movie rentals front-and-center and offers titles in HD and Dolby 5.1 Surround direct to their lounge. Jobs continually referred to the “widescreen TV” experience - and, if it can get Apple TV right this time, Apple could now become a real player in the PPV VOD market for movies." | |
| Source: PCMag.com -- Jan. 15, 2008: "AppleTV 2.0 strikes me as a Hail Mary pass. The original product has not sold all that well and that isn't even Apple's fault. I'm glad Apple finally convinced major movie studios to make their films available for purchase and rent via iTunes, but this is not a new business. CinemaNow and MovieLink have been at it for years—and with only marginal success." | |
| Source:PC World -- Jan. 15, 2008: "Steve is saying that Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Netflix, Blockbuster, and Vudu have all tried to figure out how to put Internet movies on the TV. 'We've all missed.' He's acknowledging that Apple TV 'was not what people wanted.'" "What people really wanted was 'movies, movies, movies.'" "'So we're back...with Apple TV 2.0.' Which syncs with a computer if you want, but doesn't require a computer. You can rent movies directly and watch them on your widescreen--in DVD or HD quality. Applause and whistles." | |

This is absolutely fantastic news.
Steve Jobs often downplays markets until he's ready to enter them. Calling this a "hobby" was him tipping his hand about how important this market is to Apple, and how he knew version 2 had to be better. I also love how all these new features are a software update. This means my existing device will be able to upgrade, rather than having to buy a new hardware device.
