Does Apple have a hit or a dud in the Apple TV?

With all the fanfare around the Apple TV, it's easy to forget that Apple has had its fair share of failures along with its successes.

Failures:

Newton

The first mainstream PDA, the Newton was the epitome of "before its time". The product was released before it was fully ready, causing it to suffer in a marketplace that didn't know what to make of it.

Pippin

Not many people know that Apple Computer tried its hand at gaming systems in the mid 90's. Going up against Nintendo, Sony, and Sega was a bad move. The Pippin disappeared immediately.

G4 Cube

The G4 Cube was touted for its sleek miniature design and its enormous CPU power. But its price was exceptionally high, and most buyers simply bought the more reasonably priced, equally powerful, and more expandable PowerMac G4s instead.

Successes:

Macintosh

The Macintosh was the original personal computer "for the rest of us". It was extremely expensive but still sold well, and helped Apple gain marketshare in the 80's.

iPod

The iPod needs no introduction - it is Apple's biggest hit, a massive money maker, and a cultural icon.

Powerbook/Macbook

Apple single-handedly invented the portable computer category, though the original models were so big people called them "luggables". Through the 90s and up until now, the Apple PowerBook (now MacBook) has been considered the gold standard for laptop design.

Products Interestingly Similar to Apple TV:

Macintosh TV

Apple released a product called the Macintosh TV in 1993, and discontinued it a mere 6 months later. It was cable ready, contained a tv tuner, and was a normal Macintosh to boot. It was designed for college students who had limited space in their dorm rooms, but Apple only shipped 10,000 units.
