  • Thread Where Is Apple Going With the Apple TV? Let me start off by saying that I love all things Apple. I have 3 computers in my apartment - all Apple. I have 5 iPods. I CONSTANTLY write about Apple on my site, and nothing gets me more excited that a good Apple rumor - except a good Apple CONFIRMED rumor. All that said, I'm not sold on the Apple TV. I simply think Apple has a lack of focus right now for what they want the device to be. When it was first announced last year, it seemed as if it would soley be for streaming to the living room - then it was release with a 40 gig hard drive - then just a couple months later that was upgraded to a 160 gig hard drive. One would assume this was to handle eventual HD content, but Apple's previous position had been that the hard drive would really only be used as a buffer - 160 gigs is an awfully big buffer.

So sure, maybe they realized they made a mistake by initially only launching with the 40 gig drive, and good on them for correcting it - but it's definitely given me doubts as to their direction for the device - do they have a firm one in place? After all, it was Steve Jobs himself who said at the All Things Digital Conference that the Apple TV was a mere 'hobby' - the mother of all downplays. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and Apple to fully reveal its plan. YouTube on the device is a definite nice step (especially when I heard you can tag videos on your computer to view later on the TV), but what they need is a movie rental service. It's been rumored, but if and when they get that going - and if the movies are in HD - I would buy an Apple TV in a second...if I don't win the one here :)

  • Thread Need help with Apple TV + WAN Network Hi, this really more of a usability question, but I didn't know of a better way to contact you. My name is Justin Lee - I'm a video producer in Atlanta, Ga. I have an application that I would like to use several Apple TVs for, but I'm not sure how workable this project is. Any help or suggestions you might offer would be greatly appreciated.

I have a client that has several hours of training videos that they would like to distribute to several of their stores (150+). They currently use DVDs for distribution, but they often update the videos and have to mail several supplemental DVDs each year to replace outdated ones, hence they would like to create a system that hosts one master library of files that can be synced to 150+ devices across the internet. The discussion started with using iPods, but I think Apple TVs might be a better solution.

My thought is that I could host a master iTunes library on a server with a fixed IP address and have several Apple TV units sync to the remote library.

The dilemma is how to make the master iTunes library discoverable by Apple TV units at remote locations. My understanding is that Apple TVs use Bonjour to discover iTunes libraries. Is it possible to make Bonjour work across the WAN?

Apologies if I've posted to the wrong place, but I'd appreciate any input you may have.

    Thanks!

    Justin

  • Thread Apple TV is a money pit, get free content with Sony Sony's new BIVL (Bravia Internet Video Link) is gonna rock!

i saw a demo of it at CES and it looks much more integrated into the TV than anything i have seen. How smart too; making it a separate module so that folks who do not have an interest in net vids (grandma??) do not have to pay the cost of features they will not use. GENIUS! thanks for looking out for the common folk Sony!

My feeling on BIVL's competitors is that having extra boxes (AppleTV, media center PC, etc) connected to your TV needing different remotes makes it less likely to be used after the initial "wow" factor. you have to grab 2 remotes and press through 5-9 key presses until you are watching anything. With this setup, once the novelty wears out, you will just stop using it all together.

Sony makes it so easy to browse internet video. I was watching the rep demoing it and it is 2 key presses to start browsing videos and one additional key press until you are watching it. this makes it very easy to switch over and spend your commercial time browsing and watching net vids, and then back into your show with 1-2 key presses.

the other great thing is that the system is expandable. they can add content providers dynamically. although they are only shipping with AOL, Yahoo, and Grouper the rep mentioned there are multiple other popular internet video providers lined up to provide video for this product soon after launch. I cant wait to find out who.

lastly, buying content through AppleTV / others is much like a bad cigarette habit, less the nicotine urges. you only pay a few dollars per video, but after a year of buying videos, they can really add up. and money gone because after you watch it once, there is no use watching it again.

in conclusion: free content integrated into the TV as extra channels. no PC required, no extra remotes, expandable, also: news, weather, and traffic
I will be buying one asap!
