The Great Apple TV Giveaway

Winner Announced!

The winner of The Great Apple TV Giveaway is editcandy, who entered this essay about jealousy:

"I have this client. Rich. Nice. Great home. He's got all these great gadgets. Always something new. "Oh, I just got a new MacPro and a copy of FCS 2." Or "They just delivered my new Steadicam Jr.; let's go shoot something." It's not obnoxious because he actually uses the stuff - and arguably even needs it. And yeah, I'm jealous because I could arguably need it too but I get to play with great equipment without having to worry about money.

One day I come in and yes, there's a new pile of toys and in that pile is: "Wow, you decided to get an Apple TV." And though I'm eager to see it running we have work to do. And a week later: "Huh, you haven't set up the Apple TV yet." And a week after that: well, it would have been rude to comment on how it's still sitting unopened.

I don't imagine that I'll ever be wealthy enough to buy stuff and let it sit fallow. Heck, I'm not even wealthy enough to purchase an Apple TV. But I really want to sit down and play with one. I'm craving it. It would make me happy."

Congratulations to editcandy and to everyone who took the time to send an essay in. We had a great time reading everyone's entry and we appreciate all the great comments you sent in.

Well, after all my blustering about not letting stuff sit fallow, I have to plead guilty. The Apple TV came yesterday and of course I wanted to rip open the package and get started. And of course I had other obligations. So I went out, did my stuff, tried to keep my mind off of my new toy and then at about midnight last night I finally got to start playing.

So it really didn't sit around for all that long but it felt like an eternity. I set it up. Played some Sonic Youth and The Clash and some old Muppets video clips. Finally my wife yelled at me to "turn off that noise" so I went to bed.

This is going to be tons of fun.

Oh, and that client I mentioned in my winning post? His Apple TV is still sitting on his desk unused (though it's now made its way out of the box).

Thanks again.

Anonymous Apple T.V Givaway 2 Jul 1 2007, 12:57 PM EDT by Anonymous

My name is Lauren. I think that I should win a new Apple T.V because i love the company. I am terrible with technology but can do just about anything with Apple products. I think that having an Apple T.V would also make my life less hectic. I am always doing homework or at a sport or busy in someway. Sometimes I just want to sit down and relax. An Apple T.V would be something big to look forward to after a hard week of work and playing sports. An Apple T.V would help my family as well as me. My sister has softball practices that go until 8:00 at night. She always misses the shows she likes to watch. With an Apple T.V she would be able to record the shows that she is missing and be able to watch them later. My parents both like to watch different shows, at different times. If we had an Apple T.V they cuold each enjoy the shows they want to see and there would be no arguring about the remote. I am graduating from 8th grade this year and I really wanted a new Apple laptop. I would much rather have the T.V after I read about it and saw all of the awsome things that it can do. The apple T.V seems like a huge boost is technology and I really think that me and my family could benifit from it. I would take super good care of the T.V and I would use it all the time. There are only two T.V's in our house and I think that having one in my room would be good for me and for my parents. I am always watching some kind of Pirates of the Caribbean thing on our T.V and they can never watch the news or a certain show. Please put this into consideration for an Apple T.V. If I was to win something as great as this I would be so greatful and I would use it with care and It would be the best T.V i have ever had.~Lauren

parislemon Where Is Apple Going With the Apple TV? 2 Jun 27 2007, 7:34 PM EDT by Anonymous

Let me start off by saying that I love all things Apple. I have 3 computers in my apartment - all Apple. I have 5 iPods. I CONSTANTLY write about Apple on my site, and nothing gets me more excited that a good Apple rumor - except a good Apple CONFIRMED rumor. All that said, I'm not sold on the Apple TV. I simply think Apple has a lack of focus right now for what they want the device to be. When it was first announced last year, it seemed as if it would soley be for streaming to the living room - then it was release with a 40 gig hard drive - then just a couple months later that was upgraded to a 160 gig hard drive. One would assume this was to handle eventual HD content, but Apple's previous position had been that the hard drive would really only be used as a buffer - 160 gigs is an awfully big buffer.

So sure, maybe they realized they made a mistake by initially only launching with the 40 gig drive, and good on them for correcting it - but it's definitely given me doubts as to their direction for the device - do they have a firm one in place? After all, it was Steve Jobs himself who said at the All Things Digital Conference that the Apple TV was a mere 'hobby' - the mother of all downplays. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and Apple to fully reveal its plan. YouTube on the device is a definite nice step (especially when I heard you can tag videos on your computer to view later on the TV), but what they need is a movie rental service. It's been rumored, but if and when they get that going - and if the movies are in HD - I would buy an Apple TV in a second...if I don't win the one here :)

Hi, my name is Rick Leigh. I am an actor and watch TV a lot to find different characteristics and reactions that I can use in performances. I am at rehearsals sometimes. They are always, however, during prime time television. Therefore; I miss the majority of my shows. I could get them with the Apple TV and watch them. Then, I could still run my daily performances and rehearsals and get my shows that I need to watch. My favorites are House and Law and Order: SVU as they have so many different moods which also mean different facial expressions. This could propel me into my wanted future of one day becoming a professional actor and singer. I have no money sources of my own except for my parents. My mom is a spender and dad is as stubborn as a mule. I have my own computer as well. Another fact: I love Apple products. I am now saving up for a MacBook or MacBook Pro. I love the iPods and the gorgeous designs of these technological revolutions. So please Apple TV, Pimp My Life!!!!!!

Apple really does rock. I love iPods. I would love to have an Apple T.V. It would mean the world to me. I would love to have a nice, shiny, sleek square waiting for me when I come home. I would to show it off to my friends and family. It would really mean alot. I will have this good sensation in my stomach that will say, ''You actually have an Apple T.V'' It would feel great beyond measures! I would keep on having to pinch myself to believe it is true.

I deserve a Apple T.V cause It's nearly my birthday and I know I wont get a gift as great as this. When I'm bored the Apple T.V will there for me. When I'm sad it will be there for me. When I'm lonely it will be there for me. It will always be there if I need it. I really really really want it. I want it sooo much that I can't write in words. PLzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz can I have it?
