It has all the pieces, all it needs to do now is put them together.

 TV Shows
Apple currently has 80% of primetime shows available for purchase on its store. The current price is $2 per episode or about $35 for a season. There are also specialty deals for things like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, which cost $10 for 16 new episodes.

 Movies
Apple launched movies later and so far is only getting lukewarm support from Hollywood. But it's still trying, and pressure will only increase on the studios to let Apple sell new releases. In the long run, Apple is working to boast an online library similar to Netflix, sold for $9.99 a pop.

 Podcasts
Podcasts used to be for geeks and amateurs only, but they've come a long way in a few short years. This is due in no small part to Apple's full embrace of audio and video podcasts, and they clearly consider much of the content to be high enough quality to have its own entries in the iPod and Apple TV interfaces.

 And Music, Of Course
Because of the iPod, Apple owns the market for digital music, both in marketshare and in mindshare, for every demographic.

iPod or Apple TV, Your Choice
Not only is Apple working to get a lock on all audio and video content in their store, they also sell the most successful players for audio and video. They hope to re-create this success into the living room with the Apple TV.

 Tying It All Together
Now all Apple has to do is sell subscription access to their vast libraries of content and they can replace cable and satellite radio entirely. Imagine being able to play any song in Apple's iTunes catalog, unlimited, for $15 per month. Or imagine being allowed access to any television show or movie that Apple sells for $40 per month.

It makes traditional cable and radio seem quaint, doesn't it? Apple can launch the first 100% on-demand media service. They may even pull it off.

Apple TV Versus Vudu

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Apple TV, take two

Source: PaidContent.org -- Jan. 15, 2008:

"Steve Jobs used Macworld to unveil a new iTunes Movie Rentals addition to iTunes Store and an update to Apple TV that will let customers rent the movies and more directly on the box without needing a computer. "

"...the potential game changer here is the Apple TV update - a complete interface overhaul that puts movie rentals front-and-center and offers titles in HD and Dolby 5.1 Surround direct to their lounge. It's not a full DVR device, so it doesn't compete directly against the TiVo. It doesn't play games, so it doesn't compete directly with the Xbox360's media-centric feature set. On the other hand, if you're looking for a device that seamlessly connects to the internet to play movies and primetime television shows, it's the only bet in town.

How will it improve in the next version?

A Larger Hard Drive: Of Course
The current drive only holds 40 gig, which is smaller than some iPods. Like the 5 gig first generation iPod, there's no doubt they will increase the capacity in later versions. Storage is cheap, so Apple could easily ship the next Apple TV with a 80 gig hard drive without increasing the price.

DVR Functionality: Don't Count On It
The initial comparisons to TiVo were inevitable, but Apple doesn't appear too keen on supporting traditional cable. Expect them to do an end-run to create their own pay-per-view or on-demand internet channel. Apple is looking to compete against the cable companies, not piggyback on them.

 Subscription Content: "One Never Knows"
A shareholder recently asked Steve Jobs if Apple was planning on adding the aforementioned subscription service to Apple TV. According to press reports, Jobs grinned and said "one never knows". This is the strongest signal yet that Apple is planning on releasing a subscription service soon; they have long claimed that they cannot comment on upcoming products. This semi-response in regards to a rumor is unprecedented.

 Software Updates: Confirmed
During a recent earnings call, Apple stressed that the Apple TV will be accounted as a "subscription service", meaning they will not need to report sales numbers for two years. As an explanation, their CFO stressed Apple will be continually upgrading the Apple TV via software. Whether or not this means the Apple TV will add a subscription product, software updates are coming.

 Conclusion
The Apple TV 2.0 will have a bigger hard drive and perhaps a slightly modified industrial design to set it apart. But the lion's share of the changes will occur in the software itself, not in the hardware. This is reminiscent of the iPhone approach: by shipping a cell phone with no buttons, Apple can do almost all the upgrades they want with simple software updates.

Everything except larger hard drives.

Apple Videos

Know another video related to Apple TV? I'm surprised Apple, a company renowned for good interface design, allowed this to ship. It's fine if you want to select all unwatched episodes of certain shows, but it's not nearly robust enough for many people.

What if you want to see all unwatched episodes of The Daily Show but you wanted to sync every episode (not just unwatched ones) of Battlestar Galactica? This interface won't allow it, which is a shame. Fortunately, it would be very easy to improve this functionality and bring it up to par with iTunes and the iPod. They just need to add an optional "playlists" ability.

This way, you can use iTunes' "smart playlists" feature to add any complexity you want. Drag and drop all your Battlestar episodes into a BSG playlist. Make a smart playlist called "all unwatched shows". Then you'd sync that master playlist and get all the granularity you want.

Most people would never use the feature, just like most people don't use smart playlists in iTunes. Add your $.02!

I used to work at RealNetworks on their movies team. We'd approach a network and ask permission to stream their best shows, and the answer would usually go something like this: "We'll give you I Love Lucy reruns, with commercials before, during, and after, and each episode will cost $5. Oh, and we get to keep all the money."

And frankly, it was hard for RealNetworks to fight back too much. After all, if HBO doesn't want to let you stream Six Feet Under, nothing you can say will change their mind. Which explains why the free content on Joost is so dismal.

I clicked over to Comedy Central (classically stubborn with their media) in Joost and was presented with episodes of Stella. I've heard good things about Stella, but I've heard better things about The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, neither of which were available.

I clicked to MTV: Laguna Beach. Some low budget sports network had old soccer matches. I think I saw Beauty and the Geek. It was cool to see all these shows for free, but then I realized I had no interest in watching them even if I was being paid to watch them.

Joost is in a tough spot to compete with Apple. If they stay free, the content won't even justify bandwidth costs. If they start charging money, they'll be wading into stiff competition from NetFlix, TiVo, and the cable channels, not to mention Apple itself.

Apple is smart to lead with premium content at $2 per episode and a physical box. Joost is hoping you're willing to watch classic cricket matches on your computer, whereas Apple is betting you'd rather watch all your favorite shows on your television. It won't even be a fair fight.

The Great Apple TV Giveaway

Winner Announced!

The winner of The Great Apple TV Giveaway is editcandy, who entered this essay about jealousy:

"I have this client. And yeah, I'm jealous because I could arguably need it too but I get to play with great equipment without having to worry about money.

One day I come in and yes, there's a new pile of toys and in that pile is: "Wow, you decided to get an Apple TV." And though I'm eager to see it running we have work to do. And a week later: "Huh, you haven't set up the Apple TV yet." And a week after that: well, it would have been rude to comment on how it's still sitting unopened.

I don't imagine that I'll ever be wealthy enough to buy stuff and let it sit fallow. Heck, I'm not even wealthy enough to purchase an Apple TV. But I really want to sit down and play with one. I'm craving it.
