Hi, this really more of a usability question, but I didn't know of a better way to contact you. My name is Justin Lee - I'm a video producer in Atlanta, Ga. I have an application that I would like to use several Apple TVs for, but I'm not sure how workable this project is. Any help or suggestions you might offer would be greatly appreciated.
I have a client that has several hours of training videos that they would like to distribute to several of their stores (150+). They currently use DVDs for distribution, but they often update the videos and have to mail several supplemental DVDs each year to replace outdated ones, hence they would like to create a system that hosts one master library of files that can be synced to 150+ devices across the internet. The discussion started with using iPods, but I think Apple TVs might be a better solution. My thought is that I could host a master iTunes library on a server with a fixed IP address and have several Apple TV units sync to the remote library. The dilemma is how to make the master iTunes library discoverable by Apple TV units at remote locations. My understanding is that Apple TVs use Bonjour to discover iTunes libraries. Is it possible to make Bonjour work across the WAN? Apologies if I've posted to the wrong place, but I'd appreciate any input you may have. Thanks! Justin justin@craigmiller.tv

This is absolutely fantastic news.
Steve Jobs often downplays markets until he's ready to enter them. Calling this a "hobby" was him tipping his hand about how important this market is to Apple, and how he knew version 2 had to be better. I also love how all these new features are a software update. This means my existing device will be able to upgrade, rather than having to buy a new hardware device.

I'm trying to assemble a looping lobby video system with lots of little videos in 720p and so far Apple TV just won't do it. I'm wondering if the perl add-on will allow me to do this, but so far I'm getting nothing.

Sony's new BIVL (Bravia Internet Video Link) is gonna rock!
i saw a demo of it at CES and it looks much more integrated into the TV than anything i have seen. How smart too; making it a separate module so that folks who do not have an interest in net vids (grandma??) do not have to pay the cost of features they will not use. GENIUS! thanks for looking out for the common folk Sony! My feeling on BIVL's competitors is that having extra boxes (AppleTV, media center PC, etc) connected to your TV needing different remotes makes it less likely to be used after the initial "wow" factor. you have to grab 2 remotes and press through 5-9 key presses until you are watching anything. With this setup, once the novelty wears out, you will just stop using it all together. Sony makes it so easy to browse internet video. I was watching the rep demoing it and it is 2 key presses to start browsing videos and one additional key press until you are watching it. this makes it very easy to switch over and spend your commercial time browsing and watching net vids, and then back into your show with 1-2 key presses. the other great thing is that the system is expandable. they can add content providers dynamically. although they are only shipping with AOL, Yahoo, and Grouper the rep mentioned there are multiple other popular internet video providers lined up to provide video for this product soon after launch. I cant wait to find out who. lastly, buying content through AppleTV / others is much like a bad cigarette habit, less the nicotine urges. you only pay a few dollars per video, but after a year of buying videos, they can really add up. and money gone because after you watch it once, there is no use watching it again. in conclusion: free content integrated into the TV as extra channels. no PC required, no extra remotes, expandable, also: news, weather, and traffic I will be buying one asap! - anonymous B

Agree with your comments. But the most annoying thing is that the single button press (63 secs jump) takes so long - the unit appears to lock-up for 10 seconds whilst it is doing it. By the time it actually makes the jump I've pressed three other buttons out of frustration and we're into forward-back-jump-loop-hell.

Well, after all my blustering about not letting stuff sit fallow, I have to plead guilty. The Apple TV came yesterday and of course I wanted to rip open the package and get started. And of course I had other obligations. So I went out, did my stuff, tried to keep my mind off of my new toy and then at about midnight last night I finally got to start playing.
So it really didn't sit around for all that long but it felt like an eternity. I set it up. Played some Sonic Youth and The Clash and some old Muppets video clips. Finally my wife yelled at me to "turn off that noise" so I went to bed. This is going to be tons of fun. Oh, and that client I mentioned in my winning post? His Apple TV is still sitting on his desk unused (though it's now made its way out of the box). Thanks again.

In theory what YouTube is getting out of converting their videos is the ability to store more videos on their servers and spend less on bandwidth charges due to the smaller sizes.

My name is Lauren. I think that I should win a new Apple T.V because i love the company. I am terrible with technology but can do just about anything with Apple products. I think that having an Apple T.V would also make my life less hectic. I am always doing homework or at a sport or busy in someway. Sometimes I just want to sit down and relax. An Apple T.V would be something big to look forward to after a hard week of work and playing sports. An Apple T.V would help my family as well as me. My sister has softball practices that go until 8:00 at night. She always misses the shows she likes to watch. With an Apple T.V she would be able to record the shows that she is missing and be able to watch them later. My parents both like to watch different shows, at different times. If we had an Apple T.V they cuold each enjoy the shows they want to see and there would be no arguring about the remote. I am graduating from 8th grade this year and I really wanted a new Apple laptop. I would much rather have the T.V after I read about it and saw all of the awsome things that it can do. The apple T.V seems like a huge boost is technology and I really think that me and my family could benifit from it. I would take super good care of the T.V and I would use it all the time. There are only two T.V's in our house and I think that having one in my room would be good for me and for my parents. I am always watching some kind of Pirates of the Caribbean thing on our T.V and they can never watch the news or a certain show. Please put this into consideration for an Apple T.V. If I was to win something as great as this I would be so greatful and I would use it with care and It would be the best T.V i have ever had.~Lauren

Let me start off by saying that I love all things Apple. I have 3 computers in my apartment - all Apple. I have 5 iPods. I CONSTANTLY write about Apple on my site, and nothing gets me more excited that a good Apple rumor - except a good Apple CONFIRMED rumor. All that said, I'm not sold on the Apple TV. I simply think Apple has a lack of focus right now for what they want the device to be. When it was first announced last year, it seemed as if it would soley be for streaming to the living room - then it was release with a 40 gig hard drive - then just a couple months later that was upgraded to a 160 gig hard drive. One would assume this was to handle eventual HD content, but Apple's previous position had been that the hard drive would really only be used as a buffer - 160 gigs is an awfully big buffer.
So sure, maybe they realized they made a mistake by initially only launching with the 40 gig drive, and good on them for correcting it - but it's definitely given me doubts as to their direction for the device - do they have a firm one in place? After all, it was Steve Jobs himself who said at the All Things Digital Conference that the Apple TV was a mere 'hobby' - the mother of all downplays. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and Apple to fully reveal its plan. YouTube on the device is a definite nice step (especially when I heard you can tag videos on your computer to view later on the TV), but what they need is a movie rental service. It's been rumored, but if and when they get that going - and if the movies are in HD - I would buy an Apple TV in a second...if I don't win the one here :)

Hi, my name is Rick Leigh. I am an actor and watch TV a lot to find different characteristics and reactions that I can use in performances. I am at rehearsals sometimes. They are always, however, during prime time television. Therefore; I miss the majority of my shows. I could get them with the Apple TV and watch them. Then, I could still run my daily performances and rehearsals and get my shows that I need to watch. My favorites are House and Law and Order: SVU as they have so many different moods which also mean different facial expressions. This could propel me into my wanted future of one day becoming a professional actor and singer. I have no money sources of my own except for my parents. My mom is a spender and dad is as stubborn as a mule. I have my own computer as well. Another fact: I love Apple products. I am now saving up for a MacBook or MacBook Pro. I love the iPods and the gorgeous designs of these technological revolutions. So please Apple TV, Pimp My Life!!!!!!

Apple really does rock. I love iPods. I would love to have an Apple T.V. It would mean the world to me. I would love to have a nice, shiny, sleek square waiting for me when I come home. I would to show it off to my friends and family. It would really mean alot. I will have this good sensation in my stomach that will say, ''You actually have an Apple T.V'' It would feel great beyond measures! I would keep on having to pinch myself to believe it is true.
I deserve a Apple T.V cause It's nearly my birthday and I know I wont get a gift as great as this. When I'm bored the Apple T.V will there for me. When I'm sad it will be there for me. When I'm lonely it will be there for me. It will always be there if I need it. I really really really want it. I want it sooo much that I can't write in words. PLzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz can I have it? |

I believe I deserve the APPLE TV because I cannot afford to buy one myself. I have never owned an APPLE product although I have given IPODs to friends and relatives as gifts and also gift cards. Everyone I know who has an APPLE product is very pleased with its performance and have raved to me about buying one of their products, which I would if I could afford it. I have friends who can afford it and if I am the winner I will be able to show it off and they will be able to go out and purchase one for themselves. What better way of advertising your product amongst the general public! Give it to me, pleassssssssssse!! Thank you.

My wife and I just bought our first home. We're hoping over the next few months to build a humble entertainment center that will bring all of our A/V entertainment together in a symphony of sight and sound (and smell until we get rid of the old carpet).
The one piece missing from our dream theater is that magical bridge between our TV and the large cache of music and video we have stored on our Mac Mini home server. Sure, I'm a big DIY sort of guy and I've tried out various solutions to bring my PC video to the big screen, but every attempt has ended in tears. Most people I know who built their own HTPC ended up abandoning it within a few months. The Xbox360, Tivo, and Wii all attempt in various ways to serve your local network media to your television, but none of them succeeds like the Apple TV does. None come close when comparing formats, usability, interface, speed, and the utter silence of the sleek little Apple TV box. In closing, I offer you this humble haiku: My media weeps. It longs to be enjoyed With Apple TV.

I have this client. Rich. Nice. Great home. He's got all these great gadgets. Always something new. "Oh, I just got a new MacPro and a copy of FCS 2." Or "They just delivered my new Steadicam Jr.; let's go shoot something." It's not obnoxious because he actually uses the stuff - and arguably even needs it. And yeah, I'm jealous because I could arguably need it too but I get to play with great equipment without having to worry about money.
One day I come in and yes, there's a new pile of toys and in that pile is: "Wow, you decided to get an Apple TV." And though I'm eager to see it running we have work to do. And a week later: "Huh, you haven't set up the Apple TV yet." And a week after that: well, it would have been rude to comment on how it's still sitting unopened. I don't imagine that I'll ever be wealthy enough to buy stuff and let it sit fallow. Heck, I'm not even wealthy enough to purchase an Apple TV. But I really want to sit down and play with one. I'm craving it. It would make me happy.

Has anyone with a hacked box know if the update is like a factory restore and therefore disables all the hacks installed?
